EVIDENCE OF TRUTH
It seems that the hardest times have the greatest impact on our faith. Many people have witnessed the growth of their faith during times of difficulty when the only one they had to turn to was God. John the Baptist was in a very difficult place in this passage. Herod had imprisoned him. His doubts led him to send his disciples to Jesus to ask if He truly was the Messiah. Jesus affirmed the truth by pointing them to the miraculous things that He was doing.
Ongoing hardship can cause believers to question God. Many people expect life to be easy if they’re following God’s ways. It can be discouraging when we feel that we are leading a holy life yet are still bombarded with trying times. We begin to question whether we’re doing something wrong, if God has turned His back on us, or if we’ve misunderstood who He is. Still, even during these times of reflection and searching, God is able to reveal Himself to us and remind us of His work and His presence.
Luke 7:18-35; Matthew 14:1-12
By looking to Jesus and the evidence of His identity as God’s Son, we can be encouraged even during difficult times.

This passage of Scripture is important for students because it points them to Jesus as the rock of their faith in difficult times. When doubts come, students can rest in the knowledge that the Savior they have placed their faith in will remain with them through eternity.
This passage also teaches the Essential Truth that The Holy Spirit is God and Empowerer. Just as Jesus sent word to John to encourage and empower him in his time of doubting, the Holy Spirit does the same for us today. This passage of Scripture is important for students because it teaches that God’s Word is meant to encourage, empower, mature and give us security until Christ’s return.
